Equipment

  • Large Pot
  • Dutch Oven (optional)

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ditalini pasta
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 28 ounce crushed tomatoes canned
  • 15 ounce tomato sauce canned
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried basil
  • 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • to taste salt
  • to taste pepper
  • 0.5 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the ditalini pasta and cook according to package directions, usually about 8-10 minutes, or until al dente. Drain the pasta and set it aside.
  • In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  • Pour in the crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce. Stir in the dried oregano, dried basil, and red pepper flakes (if using). Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Bring the sauce to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for at least 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld together.
  • After the sauce has simmered, add the cooked ditalini pasta to the pot. Stir well to combine, ensuring the pasta is evenly coated with the sauce.
  • Serve the ditalini pasta hot, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves.

Notes
